In the 2001 World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist attack, the company stays open.

Electronic pass card IDs are issued to all employees and the building is secured 24/7.

All mainframe computer operations are moved off site. The Vermont mainframe system is turned off.


Tom MacLeay returns as CEO

After Pat Welch announces his resignation to become President of CIGNA Health Care, retired President and COO Tom MacLeay returns as new Chief Executive Officer.


Information Systems are outsourced

Information Systems are outsourced. Jim Mallon announces his resignation as President and Chief Marketing Officer. He was essential to creating the Independent Channel at National Life.


A sign of the times

“National Life of Vermont” sign is removed from the building to be replaced by the new logo and “National Life Group.”

A bronze plaque in honor of four National Life agents lost in World War Two is dedicated at a meeting of the General Agents.


Home Office building is awarded LEED certification

The Home Office building is awarded LEED environmental certification. 418 solar panels provide 75,000 kilowatt-hours per year. A 2,000-panel array will be installed on company property six years later.

The book CAUSE! by best-selling authors Jackie and Kevin Freiberg featuring the unique servant-leadership culture of National Life is published.

National Life rolls out the Main Streets Across America campaign.

Company is 18th largest in the U.S. in terms of sales.

SVP Ruth Smith retires – her credits include the creation of the Independent Marketing Channel.

The campus goes tobacco-free.


Tom MacLeay steps down as Chairman

Tom MacLeay steps down as Chairman of the Board and is replaced by CEO Mehran Assadi.


National Life makes the Fortune 1000 list

National Life makes the Fortune 1000 list. National Life GroupFoundation’s annual budget doubles to $2 million. Share the Good launches, matching over $250,000 in employee donations.

The company is receiving 2 new policy applications per minute. National Life Health and Wellness Center opens.


Over one million customers protected

National Life passes its goal to protect one million customers. DoGood Fest concert sells out with 10,000 attendees.


National Life establishes a $20 million endowment fund

National Life establishes a $20 million endowment fund for the National Life Group Foundation. BUILD (Blacks Uplifted in Leadership Development) is established to support the Black agent community, growing 1200% in its first year.

The company goes fully remote due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

LIMRA ranks National Life ninth in overall sales and second in IUL sales for the life insurance industry.

DoGood Fest returns to Vermont

DoGood Fest returns to Vermont, and the inaugural Do Good Fest Texas is held, raising $146,000 for local nonprofits.
